Okay, I was recapping my recent trip
the other day Now, where were we. Ah yes,
Charlotte.
The next stop was back in Asheville, in part to give a couple additional members of the
perennial top twenty team in the
World's Largest Trivia Contest a swing at a local bar's quizzo night. We took a slighter longer route from Charlotte in order to get up onto the
Blue Ridge Parkway, giving both
caker_66 and
satch_paige a few photo opportunities that involved greenery, waterfalls and mountains rather than ballplayers and bars. That delayed us somewhat, but we still got to town at a reasonable time to meet
firthofforth for lunch at the finest local eating establishment to use an
animal's ass as part of its logo. From there,
firthofforth was kind enough to make like an E-Z Cab and give us a ride downtown. We tried out a couple places, discovering that it's illegal to play cards in a bar in Asheville and that our favorite bar in town doesn't particularly care about that, since we spent a significant amount of time dealing out kings and queens at
Jack of the Wood. The quiz night didn't go as well, in no small part because the regular writer ceded the floor and the questions to his once-a-month stand-in.
We embarked for Atlanta, our final stop, the next morning. This was our one opportunity to get in a major league game, but the real appeal of Georgia's biggest city was the presence of
caker_66's old bandmate
Set Me Frehley. We arrived mid-afternoon and enjoyed the benevolence of he and his lovely, pseudonym-free partner (she had to work that evening, so could only engage in our hijinks to a limited degree). After methodically destroying the craftsmanship of his backyard horseshoe pits, we headed to a local restaurant where a goof with North Carolina plates swiped our parking spot and I had some phenomenal catfish tacos.
Mr. Frehley used his
powerful connections to get us top notch third-base side seats at
Turner Field to watch the Braves play the Florida Marlins. The home run derby feel of the earlier games was in place here, as
Chipper Jones kept his average above .400 with a 2-for-4 night that included his 399th career longball and
Dan Uggla, second baseman for the Marlins, went deep twice. There was a group of people behind us who clearly seemed to be family of Uggla, so it was enjoyable to watch them react to his power surge. The game was terrific, with the Braves taking back the lead in the bottom of the eighth and hanging on to win thanks, undoubtedly, to the action movie logo rendering of his name that blazed across every screen in this place to usher Braves closer
Rafael Soriano to the mound.
Our post-game celebration involved making our hosts watch
Triviatown. So, let that be fair warning to any who deign to open their doors to this particular band of spirited travelers in the future.
