Now that the nation's newspaper has made sure commuters across the country know about the event I'm participating in this weekend, it seems only right that Five for Friday commemorate the contest, too. Luckily, [info]jupiterjuniper made a fantastic suggestion that I'm going to adapt just a touch so it's different from a prior topic.

Besides, this weekend isn't just about the questions.

As always, please play along...

Five Songs That Pose Questions That You Know The Answers To

1. Sonic Youth, "Do You Believe in Rapture?" Especially when the beautiful, bendy, abrasive music of this band is blasting loud and grand.

2. Billy Bragg, "Which Side Are You On?" The Cakers.

3. Blue Rodeo, "What Am I Doing Here?" Okay, here's a break from the glib answers since I actually know some cool background about this song. It was written about a terrible gig the Canadian band played at some State Fair at the end of a long tour. They were playing for no money, no one was paying attention and they kept looking out at the ridiculous pageantry of the carnival in front of them and feeling momentary misery over their lot in life. "On this useless night/with you so far away/I stand in front of this ferris wheel/And I wonder what am I doing here." So I guess the actual answer to the question is, um, contemplating giving up your music career?

4. The Lovin' Spoonful, "Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind?" About 432 times this weekend?

5. Superchunk, "Does Your Hometown Care?" Since Stevens Point feels more like my hometown than anyplace else and considering the weekend event I'm currently preoccupied with, I'd have to say that's a "yes."

1. Elvis Costello: "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding?"
Those three things make one think of hippies. And hippies are funny.

2. The Buzzcocks: "Ever Fallen In Love?"
Why yes. Yes I have. Wait, with someone I shouldn't have fallen in love with? Yes, that too.

3. The Dismemberment Plan: "What Do You Want Me to Say?"
Travis, I'd like you to say you'll never again release a record as bad (or as unfortunately titled) as Travistan.

4. The Misfits: "Mommy, Can I Go Out & Kill Tonight?"
Why of course you can, Glenn.

5. Tuesday Weld: "Are You the Boy?"
For you, Tuesday? Oh my gosh, yes.

3. franz ferdinand - "what you waiting for?" for 3:30pm to arrive so i can leave work, head to the airport, and be in NYC!

1. Self- "What Are You Thinking?!". Right now, I'm not thinking much of anything.

2. The Telephone Company- "What Will We Do?". Well, we'll sit here in this room for a while longer, then we'll have a busy week before we go to NYC.

3. Danielson Famile- "Who Are Parents?". They should be people who always love you and are there for you. Sometimes, they suck. (And this was originally a Shaggs song.)

4. Ween- "Mister, Would You Please Help My Pony?". Well, I'm not a "mister", but I will gladly help your pony if I can.

5. Rapider Than Horsepower- "Where Am I Going?". Right now, nowhere at all...to sleep, maybe.

and thank you. i'm quite fond of it myself.
20th-Apr-2007 11:57 pm (UTC) - do answer every question with a question? is that a challenge?
1. Minutemen, "Do You Want New Wave Or Do You Want The Truth?" I want it all, baby.

2. Discharge, "Does This System Work?" Of course not. Will any system work? That's debatable.

3. The Fall, "Who Makes The Nazis?" Not just Germans, that's for sure.

4. Faust, "Why Don't You Eat Carrots?" Ask Rachel or Lindsay. I've had enough Carrot McNuggets to last three existences.

5. James Blood Ulmer, "Are You Glad To Be In America?" Yes! I won't bear bandwagon patriotism or spout off trendy criticisms, because damn, son, this country is ai'ight. Rock and roll, baby. Freedom of speech.
22nd-Apr-2007 01:26 am (UTC) - Let's break out the booze, and have a ball
Lurker
1. The Velvet Underground, "What Goes On" This song, apparently, for quite some time, at least in the live version. At nearly 9 minutes it is certainly not as long as "Sister Ray" but is definitely still long for a pop song. However, like "Sister Ray," it is also never boring. In fact, the version off of 1969: Velvet Underground Live is ridiculously exciting. Lou Reed's rhythm guitar chugs away for all nine minutes, and as the song nears its conclusion, its ceaseless throbbing has taken it over completely, just like in "Waiting for the Man," but unlike in "Waiting for the Man," the ceaseless throbbing doesn't signal mounting paranoia and fear, but thrilling raucous glee. The VU's seemingly happiest moment on record.

2. The Rolling Stones, "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" I suppose Mick is not asking anyone like me this question, but I put it down anyway because I love the title. It (the title and the song) epitomizes the Stones' snotty '60s persona perfectly. And my answer... well, I suppose I would have to answer yes. Mick's question is certainly delivered with a leering sneer, but he still captures rather well the fear of growing older and lapsing into bourgeoisie complacency. Which just goes to prove, Mick might have been a middle-class Economics major pretty boy, who spent most of his life as a skirt-chasing Lothario and was always in it just for the money, but he could still write a catchy pop song with surprisingly insightful lyrics, and deliver it with nearly unmatchable charisma. It's almost unfair the universe bestowed such diverse talents on one man, but didn't your parents ever tell you... Life Isn't Fair.

3. Pixies, "Is She Weird" I suppose it's all rather relative, and besides, it's a question I'd really rather not answer, all things being equal. Glass houses and all. I'm sure you understand.

4. Miles Davis, "So What" I don't have a response. Can you have a response to a question like that? But is there a song title that captures Miles Davis better than that? I have an answer for that one. No. I do think not.

5. Peggy Lee, "Is That All There Is?" Yup.

did you write this while you were sleeping? or was it just a side effect of your daily vodka-and-coffee?
